X-files DVD mini games

On the region 1 (US NTSC) DVD releases of the first nine seasons of the X-Files, the DVD disc containing bonus material also contained a DVD-ROM game (commonly disc 7 - Note that the games are not on the region 2 EU PAL releases). The games are:

"Roots of Conspiracy" and "Urbs Tertia" can be downloaded here (Windows only)

The games are relatively simple web based games developed in Macromedia Director (Later acquired and rebranded by Adobe), also known as "Shockwave" (not to be confused with "Shockwave flash"). For security reasons this browser plugin has been discontinued, along with most other legacy browser plugins like Flash, Java, etc. Running the games on a modern computer with a modern browser is not possible, but with "Firefox portable" it can be done.

To run the game you must first install 'Shockwave version 10' (included). After installation, run the .bat script for the game you wish to play.

Known issues:
- Freeze when loading the game. The problem is the "Shockwave" plugin so unfortunately there is not much there can be done about it except for trying to run the game again.
- The intro music ends abruptly. Might be fixable, but it is not a big issue.
If you encounter other issues, try send me an email and I will see what I can do. No guarantees though.

The games run in a portable version of Firefox 3.5. Other old versions of Firefox work, but version 3.5 is small and seems to run the games OK in my limited experience. Being a very old version of Firefox, and including two very insecure browser plugins, I removed the address and search bar to prevent (most) novice users from inadvertently using the insecure browser to access the regular internet. I presume that any user who knows how to restore the address and search bar would also know that doing so comes with a risk. The "Flash" browser plugin was easy to add to a portable Firefox instance, but "Shockwave" seems to expect certain registry entries and certain files to be available in "system32" / "SysWOW64", hence installation is necessary. Luckily the plugin does not become active in any other (new) browsers after installation, greatly reducing the safety hazard. You can uninstall "Shockwave" when you are done playing in any case.

The season 1 game was on disc 7 in a folder named "\fox". The season 4 game was on disc 7 in a folder named "\common\win". If you own any of the other X-Files seasons on region 1 DVD, please get in touch with me at s0ren(a)theprodigy.dk, so that we can work together to make the rest of the games available.

Special thanks to Anthony “Ded10c” Hadley for help gathering the games and information about them.
